Well, it's been a fun week of exploring my interest in cyberdecks*. More fun to consider the cultural conversation they are soliciting.

My plan for this week was to dive into cyberdecks to explore as a hobby. Or see if this is just a short lived hyper-fixation that I can use to fuel my writing endeavors. What I discovered was cyberdecks as a commentary on our relationship with technology.

The trend of cyberdecks may feel a bit eye-rolly for anyone judging the power of the computer*. Maybe that's not what it's about. Maybe the cyberdeck is a modern folk craft. It stems from a mix of older practices* and modern folklore*. Like a lot of folk crafting, there's no need to make your own. Yet we do.

What if cyberdecks could build a smaller, stranger internet?

Let's talk about the writerdeck. The limited but focused cousin of the cyberdeck or would it be sibling? Maybe clone? It's pretty much a cyberdeck but just for writing.

Let's start off with what I don't like about cyberdecks. They are worse computers. Let's face it, they are. "Well," you say, "Cyberdecks get you out of the Apple/Windows environment, freeing you up!"

Day one of cyberdeck week.

I never got poetry growing up. I understood it more as a clutter of words. Like an abstract painting. The rhythm, cadence, and rhyme was intellectual. I knew they were there but I didn't feel anything reading poems.

John Early is someone that makes me stop and pay attention. I don't always get it but his acting feels like an abstract painting. Which I don't always get those but I always pay attention.

I'm a softie.

I've been thinking about collecting lately. It's been a while since I've had a serious collection of any kind. I say serious but I was never precious about the things I collected. Comics, toys, books, video games. I just kinda collected things that I found interesting. The collections mostly made sense to me. And I used everything.

The great thing about being an aging Millennial man is having access to information that my father, papaw, and forefathers didn't have. The bad thing about being an aging Millennial is having access to information that my father, papaw, and forefathers didn't have, because it means I don't have any excuse to not do the things I need to do!

Adding to the Marathon talk, Bertii, yet another YouTuber, hits the nail on the head with his take. What is Marathon? Maybe it's an aspect of the genre to fit into accessible or hardcore. I certainly don't think that was considered for Halo or Destiny. They were just good games to jump into a play with people with room for hardcore players.

I picked up Bungie's Marathon this past week. When I saw the first Marathon trailer, I was wowed by the look. Most people seem to be. It dropped off my radar as I'm not usually a FPS guy with the exception of Overwatch.

I am trying to not drop into hyper-fixations where I spend a dumb amount of money only to bail after all the chemicals in brain have oozed away. BUT DAMMIT I WANNA GET INTO FPV DRONES!

I finally watched Blade Runner last week and Blade Runner 2049 last night. I loved the original. The sequel was ok. Ryan Gosling was good as usual but I felt the scenes he and Harrison Ford shared were not great. They came out from behind the characters. Speaking as a non-actor

My best friend passed away four years ago this summer. I'd known him since fifth grade. Before he passed we were working on a podcast and a possible book. I still can't watch any videos of him.
